4 Tips For Successfully Hiring Remote Sales People

Utilizing outsourcing and hiring remote sales people can be a great choice for new entrepreneurs. Done right this can provide you with a high powered sales team at very affordable rates without the need to incur more overhead. However, if you aren’t careful in your recruiting you could end up burning a lot of opportunities and missing out on a sizable amount of revenues. So what can you do to ensure you make the right hires?

1. Screening

Look for those who have specific experience in your type of sales and in your industry whether it is outbound telemarketing for a website design firm or door to door sales or solar panels. More importantly look at how recently they have been actively involved in sales. It is easy to get rusty with 6 months sitting at home.

2. Interview

Regardless of how dazzling the resume is ALWAYS do a phone interview. Who knows what impossible to decipher accent or lifeless voice is lurking on the other end of the phone unless you actually talk to them yourself?

3. Testing

Taking the time to put your sales people to the test before letting them loose on your customers is a must. Put them on the spot and make them sell you something completely random without warning. Tell them to try out the first batch of ‘leads’ conveniently seeded with your other staff and partner’s numbers to see if they can think on their feet and how easily they give up. Don’t make it easy on them.

4. Monitoring

Unfortunately the same magical ingredient that seems to make great sales people and gives them the golden tongue also often seems to mysteriously be inseparable from the tendency to not always work well when not constantly held accountable. Set a clear schedule, use a cloud based sales software so that you can see that they are making progress and reaching out to prospects daily and monitor performance via metrics. Hold on to the good ones and replace the bad.
