Biggest Business Lesson from the Prime Time EmmysIf you tuned into the 62nd Prime Time Emmys last night, there was a huge business (and frankly life lesson) to be learned if you watched closely. On a night that is full of anticipation to celebrate the best of television, it was remarkable how many of the winners started off their acceptance speech with, “I didn’t really expect to win…” By most accounts, the nominees are the best in their field and were selected above all of their peers to represent their craft in a given category. Certainly, they should be expecting to win, they should be anticipating the presenter reading their name when the envelope is opened. I would expect these individuals to have the confidence or at least the presence of mind to anticipate and prepare for a win. My favorite moment of the evening, which made this point perfectly, was the expression on Edie Falco’s face when her name was called. Thank goodness for DVR technology. I had to pause it and replay it a couple of times. It was VERY apparent she had NO EXPECTATION of hearing her name called, even though she is a previous Emmy winner. You must have a plan when you start or expand your business. You expect that something is going to happen. Sometime good, sometimes not so good. But you have an expectation that things are going to work out and you anticipate the outcomes you desire. You expect to hear them call your name as the winner. So in short, the lesson is to keep your focus on your plan, anticipate the results that you desire, and expect that you will find success as you’ve defined it. Leave a Reply |
