Executive Business Coach Chuck Boyce’s Blog: Fear Is a 4-Letter WordAs a small business coach, I deal with all kinds of people who are experiencing all kinds of business challenges. But one single factor keeps popping up time and time again – stopping growth in its tracks, preventing problems from being solved and just generally holding people back from going the distance. That something is fear. In the business world, fear is a 4-letter word. It’s a dangerous word. Because time and time again, it gets in the way of the things entrepreneurs need to do to be successful. I’m not saying small business owners are a naturally fearful bunch. Anyone who leaves the relative safety of a 9 to 5 job behind, takes the leap and goes out on their own to become a business owner and control their own destiny has to have some degree of bravery. The problem is that fear is a bigger factor once you get outside the protected world of working for someone else. Success in business sometimes means taking chances and pushing yourself beyond your own limits. It can mean doing things you’re not entirely comfortable with – especially if you are a solo entrepreneur and need to wear all of the hats in your business. So how do you get past fear? The best way is to acknowledge it. Admitting to yourself that you are afraid is the first step in getting past it. And if you can’t get past it on your own, consider talking with an outsider like a peer you trust or a small business coach who can help you work through it. Because on the other side of that fear is success – the success you deserve.
