Executive Business Coach Chuck Boyce’s Blog: How Lucky Can You Get?

Luck can be important to business success, but, as I write in my new article, “Generating Your Own Good Luck,” most of our good luck is the end result of our own day-to-day efforts.

According to “Psychology Today,” however, there are ways that you can actually help generate good luck, all things being equal.  Dr. Srini Pillay in an article from the magazine last year said there are 3 factors that make any kind of luck possible:

  • TAKE A CHANCE TO GET A CHANCE

This makes perfect sense; you can’t win if you don’t gamble.  This is where optimists triumph over pessimists.  If an outcome looks uncertain, the pessimist will usually opt out of an attempt, where the optimist will go for it.  And the more you go for it, the more chances you have at success.

  • TRUST YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS

It’s true that the right circumstances breed good luck.  But sometimes the subconscious of your brain is secretly guiding you into those circumstances because it sees things before your conscious mind does (this is called “pre-emptive perception,” in case you were wondering).  Call it instincts or intuition, but if you have a strong unexplainable urge to pursue something, it might be worth the effort.

  • LEARN HOW TO READ OTHERS

Often, luck depends on knowing what another person is thinking.  By developing your empathic skills, you can read what’s on someone else’s mind.  This not only helps in poker games, it’s also good for business deals.   How you react can also affect the emotions of others.  If you know how to make someone else nervous or impatient, or trusting and relaxed, you can set the tone of a meeting or negotiation.

Take all that on board – and good luck getting luck!
