Executive Business Coach Chuck Boyce’s Blog: Putting Thought Leadership Into Action

In my new article, “Share the Wealth – Through Thought Leadership,” I discuss how sharing dynamic ideas and useful information with others in your business category can help you continue to grow and innovate.

Now I’d like to share the story of one business that’s doing just that.  Well, I’m not sure you can call it a business exactly – it’s a police department.

The law enforcement department of Providence, Rhode Island was something of a corrupt joke a few years ago.  Now, it’s regarded as a prime example of how a police department should operate – to such an extent that the police chief, Dean Esserman, is formalizing their “thought leadership” in a series of awesome programs.

Esserman intends to turn his force in to a “teaching police department” – and he’s convinced other police chiefs in other cities to exchange ideas, swap personnel, and try out new methodologies to combat traditional crime problems.

“We want to become a place that embraces research, that figures out and spreads methodologies that work in the ways that medical schools do,” he told BNET.  “Think of what it would mean to create that sort of institution and those types of values in a police department.”

In addition to reaching out to other city police departments, Esserman is also working closely with local doctors in a “Cops and Docs” program.  He has also teamed up with the Justice System Training and Research Institute, in the School of Justice Studies at Roger Williams University, to allow his officers to continue their education.

This “teaching department” concept has “an emphasis for police officers on life-long learning, like we do for doctors. This will give them access to the best thinkers and professionals in the field,” said Dr. Joan Sweeney, a co-director of the project.

The more you reach out, the more you get back.  That’s what this kind of thought leadership is all about.
