Executive Business Coach Chuck Boyce’s Blog: The Key to Happiness? Run Your Own Business!

One of my favorite perks of life as a small business coach is the fact that I get to work with people who are, for the most part, happy.  Entrepreneurs tend to be positive types who like to take responsibility for their success, their growth and their lives.  So they tend to be pro-active people who are open and willing to learn new things, to push themselves and to constantly try to learn more and do more.  Their energy and enthusiasm can be infectious.  In fact, sometimes just talking with my clients can give me a boost and spur my own creativity.

So I wasn’t especially surprised to read that in a recent TB Bank survey, 69% of American small business owners identified themselves as “happy,” and 61% believe that they are happier than their peers.  Fred Graziano, the bank’s head of retail and small service banking, reflected on the study, surmising that it, “confirms that life as a small business owner can be quite fulfilling. Even in a tough economy, they’re willing to tackle the ongoing challenges of managing a business in exchange for the personal satisfaction of being their own boss.”

For anyone striving to become a business owner today, I think this makes an especially powerful point.  More conservative types – maybe relatives, or maybe friends – might try to discourage you from taking the risk of going out on your own.  But clearly, the majority of small business owners think that risk is worth it.  If your dream is to be your own boss, my advice to you is to follow that dream.  Yes, do your homework.  Understand your market.  Seek help from a qualified coach if you can.  But if you’re willing to put in the work, you’ll likely be rewarded with a happy life.

And isn’t that what everyone wants?
