Executive Business Coach Chuck Boyce’s Blog: Work and Happiness

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to become a business owner and achieve success.  As an executive business coach, it’s my job to help clients reach their professional goals.   There is something wrong, however, when you pin all your happiness on the amount in your banking account.

A recent study by researchers at Stanford and Wharton found five main sources of happiness for people – none of them involve becoming a millionaire.  But paying attention to them can boost your level of work satisfaction.  Here are the “Big Five” and how you can make them work for you business:

1)  SPEND TIME WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE

These usually include family, friends and anyone you’re in a romantic relationship with.  But it’s also why you should seek out people you genuinely like to work with in your business life.  It makes the grind a lot more pleasurable.

2)  INVOLVE YOURSELF IN “SOCIALLY-CONNECTING” ACTIVITIES

This can include volunteering or hanging out with friends.  Again, if you can find ways to do this with your work, through Mastermind Groups or mentoring, it’s all good.

3) DAYDREAM

They say that planning for a vacation generally gives people more pleasure than the vacation itself.  When you let your mind go where it wants to, it frees the brain and gives you a “mental break.”  Taking a few minutes to do just that can be a big help when you’re going 24/7 building a business.

4)  CONCENTRATE ON THE “HERE AND NOW”

Maybe you have 400 things to do on your to-do list.   If all you do is think about the other 399 while you’re doing the first one, you’re not going to do that task very well.  Focus on what you like to do and be in the moment with it.  Try to delegate, outsource or just plain get rid of what you don’t like to do.

5)  HAPPINESS CHANGES

As you grow older – and grow your business – the things that give you happiness will change.   Don’t resist that evolution – go with it to find satisfaction in your work and in your life.
