To Risk Nothing Is To Risk Everything

Geena Davis once said ‘To risk nothing is to risk everything’.

This has never been more true for the American worker and entrepreneur than today. Despite the ongoing Occupy Wall Street protests it is clear, from the government’s moves in the mortgage industry last week that it is unlikely any personal bail outs are on the way for those who want them the most.

The antiquated strategy of going to college, walking into a cushy 9-5 and waiting it out until retirement from under your shell is simply not going to work for most anymore. Regardless of whether you are unemployed or you are working in upper management at a large, established corporation right now it is obvious that unless you take action and take your financial future into your own hands the odds of enjoying a decent amount of spare time while you are young and being financially secure are stacked against you.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to start the next Apple or Facebook but unless you are willing to step outside of your comfort zone, start your own enterprise in one form or another and are able to control your investments you are risking everything. Not just the difference in a few hundred dollars a month income but risking your future health and level of fulfillment in life as well as the financial future and opportunities for your family.

In fact if nothing else motivates you to open your own business then take a moment to think about the advice you would give your children and what you want most for them. Yes, surely you want them to be comfortable and financial secure but more than anything wouldn’t you want to encourage them to follow their passions and dreams, to grab life by the horns? Have you been a good example of that?
