What Google’s Social Search Means For Your Business

Facebook obviously saw Google’s new Social Search as a big enough threat to make it hire a PR firm to run a campaign against Google. What will it mean for your business?

For those unfamiliar with Google’s new Social Search feature, it now brings results from your contact’s social media into your search engine results. In the reverse it will of course start bringing up results from you or your competitor’s social media in with your prospects web searches. This move into a more personalized search is designed around the fact that you will often have similar likes, tastes and interests as other members of your various networks.

What difference is it going to make to your business? For a start it means that if you are not using social media sites like Facebook, blogs and social bookmarking sites like Stumble Upon you are not going to be as prominent in search engine results as your competitors who are. So posting regular, fresh content frequently just got a lot more critical.

Secondly, it means that the content you are posting is much more likely to be getting read as opposed to just sitting there helping your SEO. So if you have just been using junk content to prop up your rankings and drive in more traffic now you have even more need to start investing in higher quality content.
